INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Aug. 19, 2015) — An armed robbery suspect who died after an encounter with police was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Indianapolis Metropolitan police said Wednesday.

Sources had previously told CBS4 that Michael Henderson, 21, fatally shot himself while officers closed in. A preliminary autopsy confirmed it, IMPD said. Investigators said they recovered a handgun from Henderson’s vehicle following the Monday night incident.

IMPD and FBI investigators were tracking Henderson and another man, identified as Dequan Washington, 20, following a robbery at a Hardee’s in the 4900 block of East 56th Street Monday night. Police followed them to Marcy Village Apartments in the 4500 block of Marcy Lane. While Washington got out of the car, Henderson stayed inside, police said. Officers heard a gunshot and then opened fire.

Washington has been arrested on a preliminary charge of robbery. Investigators believe both Henderson and Washington are responsible for a series of armed robberies around central Indiana. Washington is being held at the Marion County Jail.

IMPD’s Commercial Robbery Task Force and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force are continuing their investigation into the robberies.
