Update (May 15, 2016)– Joshua Walker was sentenced to 10 years in prison with two years suspended. He also received 488 days of jail credit.

Original story:

NEW CASTLE, Ind. – New Castle authorities say a 20-year-old man lied about his age and said he was 15 in order to “date” a 13-year-old girl.

Joshua Lee Waller has been charged with child molesting and child solicitation.

According to court documents, Waller told the family of the girl that his name was Josh Sweet and he was 15 years old.

The girl’s uncle told CBS4 that after growing suspicious, he searched for Waller on Facebook, and that’s when he discovered he was lying about his identity and his age.

“It doesn’t happen routinely, but it does happen where someone poses that they’re underage and this is what can happen,” Henry County Prosecutor Joe Bergacs said.

The girl’s family told police they looked through her cell phone and found evidence she was sexually active with him, according to court documents.

On Sunday, the victim’s mother confronted Waller and called police, and that’s when police caught him riding his bike away from their house.

Bergacs said the case serves as a reminder that parents can never do too much digging or research, when it comes to their kids.

“I’m a parent, many others are out there: Know what your kids are doing. … Keep an eye on them and know what they’re doing online so hopefully we can protect and prevent these things,” Bergacs said.

Waller was still in jail on a $1,500 cash bond as of Wednesday night. His trial date is set for August 15 in Henry Circuit Court 1.
