INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A crash involving multiple vehicles closed part of I-465 on the south side Monday morning.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. on I-465 westbound just past I-65.

The crash involved three semi trucks, a flatbed semi, a box truck and a passenger vehicle, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department. Four people were taken to area hospitals, although their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Preliminary reports indicated that the first semi slowed to a stop for traffic and the other vehicles behind the truck caused a chain-reaction crash. The box truck went off the road and into the grass. The flatbed truck was carrying steel rods that came off the trailer and went through the windshield of one of the semi trucks; one of the rods made it into the rear bedding area of the cab where one of the men was sleeping. Neither person was seriously injured, IFD said.

A hazmat team was dispatched to the scene for a possible fuel spill, but IFD said IFD Tactical Units were able to mitigate the spill of 10 to 15 gallons of oil, transmission fluids and diesel.

All lanes of I-465 were blocked, although traffic was able to get by on the left shoulder. Police are asking people to avoid the area and look for an alternate route.
