SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. – A man died early Wednesday morning after crashing his car into a downed semi trailer on I-74 in Shelby County.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. on westbound I-74 near the London Road exit. The Shelby County Coroner’s Office confirmed a fatality related to the crash.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, units were dispatched to the 104 mile marker, where they found a semi truck had flipped over and skidded into the median.

The driver told deputies the truck was carrying a light load and strong winds made him lose control of the vehicle. Part of the trailer blocked the left lane of I-74, and the driver said he heard a collision as he was trying to exit the truck.

The sheriff’s department said a silver Mercedes driven by 30-year-old Gary E. Oldham struck the semi’s trailer. Oldham was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His vehicle sustained extensive damage to the front driver’s side.

The crash remains under investigation.
