INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 16, 2016)- Butler’s basketball program will honor former player Andrew Smith Saturday at its game against St. John’s.
Smith died Tuesday after his very public battle against cancer. Students and players will raise money for Smith’s family as part of Butler’s “Stay Positive Day,” program. The program is in its third year and is run by two-time cancer survivor Eric Day. Day will sell wristbands, bookmarks, posters and T-shirts at the game.
The wristbands will have the inscription “G3”, which stands for Give God Glory. Posters and bookmarks will feature some of Smith’s favorite bible verses and the T-shirts will have an image of a Butler’s mascot with antlers on it to symbolize Smith’s “Moose” nickname.
Butler announced that at Saturday’s game a video tribute and a moment of silence are planned for Smith. The team will also debut new jersey patches that read “AS44” in honor of Smith. The team plans to wear the patch for the rest of the season.
