UPDATE (Dec. 17, 2019) — Levente Lazar was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A former Indiana University grad student is accused of killing his own mother.

The murder took place in California, but police arrested the suspect this month at his home in Bloomington.

The 26-year-old suspect remains behind bars at the Monroe County jail, but he has signed an extradition waiver and will be sent back to California soon.

The investigation began on October 25, 2018 when Grover Beach officers were dispatched to a home for a welfare check. Grover Beach is a small community in California near San Francisco.

Police found the 64-year-old woman stabbed to death inside her own home.

Grover Beach police traveled to Bloomington to interview Levente Lazar, 26, and execute search warrants at his apartment on November 6.

After questioning Lazar, they arrested him, and he was charged with one count of murder in connection with the death.

Court records claim the 26-year-old stabbed his mother multiple times.

Although prosecutors in San Luis Obispo County haven’t explained a motive for the crime, the criminal complaint claims the killing was committed deliberately and with premeditation.

Prosecutors say after the killing, Lazar then flew back nearly 2,200 miles to his home in Bloomington.

This month police and prosecutors from California served a search warrant at Lazar’s apartment and took the suspect into custody.

The victim, Athena Valentiny, worked as a nurse for the California Department of Corrections.

Officials at IU confirm Lazar was a grad student studying U.S. history, but had not enrolled this semester and is no longer a student at the university.

Police in California declined to comment on the case because it remains an active investigation.

Jailers in Monroe County say transportation arrangements are still being worked out.
