INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (November 11th, 2015) – Many people get into the giving spirit this time of year, but if you’re planning to donate to a charity during the holiday season, make sure you know how your money is being spent. Experts say this is also a prime time for scammers to take advantage of your generosity.
Tim Maniscalo, the president of the of the Better Business Bureau in Central Indiana, says one great resource is Give.org. You can find accredited charities on the site and see exactly what standards that charity met, like a detailed expense breakdown. The report also tells you how much money actually goes to the cause.
“Make sure they are a 501c3 charity with the IRS, that way you can take it off your taxes,” Maniscalo said.
“You want to make sure that you see how much of their money goes to the cause, who sits on their board, how much their staff is paid, those types of things,” he said.
Maniscalo says the Better Business Bureau just launched a new tracking tool to fight back against fraud as well. There’s now a free, interactive site where you can see a map of the reported scams in your area or report any issues. Find out more by clicking here.
