Update (10/15/23): IMPD announced Sunday that 31-year-old Mar-Kel Sampson was arrested for his alleged role in Saturday morning’s officer-involved shooting incident. Sampson is preliminarily charged with battery with a deadly weapon and pointing a firearm.

At this time, IMPD investigators believe Sampson shot somebody and was then subsequently shot by an off-duty officers.


UPDATE (10/14/23): In an update released just after 10 p.m. Saturday, IMPD reported that the off-duty officer involved in the incident was in full-police uniform with a fully marked police car parked outside Bubbaz Bar and Grill.

When the incident broke out, the off-duty cop was the only police officer at the scene.


INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating after an officer-involved shooting injured three people early Saturday morning on Indy’s east side.

Police have said that two people are in critical condition.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the officer was working security at Bubbaz Bar and Grill when a disturbance broke outside of the business just before 2 a.m.

The off-duty officer attempted to deescalate the situation. As the officer was deescalating the situation, an alleged suspect fired shots from inside the business hitting a man and woman.

The officer returned fire and struck the man. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

The woman drove herself northwest of the shooting scene where she was later found by officers.

No officers were hurt in the incident.
