Chain-reaction crash on I-74 in Shelby County kills 1 person

SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. — One person died in a Sunday afternoon crash involving multiple vehicles on I-74 in Shelby County.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the crash included four vehicles: a semi truck and three passengers vehicles. It happened on I-74 westbound around the 120 mile marker.

The sheriff’s department said a semi truck struck a vehicle in slow or stopped traffic, leading to a chain reaction. The first vehicle struck was a 2021 Hyundai driven by 47-year-old Allen Jeter Aubrey of Indianapolis. Aubrey died in the crash, police said. A 41-year-old passenger in his vehicle was taken to an Indianapolis hospital.

The drivers of two other vehicles involved in the chain-reaction crash were transported to a hospital after complaining of pain.

The interstate was closed for about four hours. The crash remains under investigation.
