BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Dec. 4, 2015)– The Bloomington Police Department says an armed sexual assault near IU’s campus did not happen as reported by the complainant.
Just after 3 a.m. on November 17, Bloomington Police responded to Brownstone Terrace Apartments located in the 200 block of East 14th Street on a report of an armed sexual assault.
A 22-year-old woman said she heard someone knock on her front door. When she opened the door, she told police a man she didn’t know pushed his way into her apartment and forced her into the bedroom with a gun.
She reported the suspect sexually assaulted her and fled the residence.
The woman provided police with a detailed description of the suspect, and a sketch was released to help generate tips.
Within a few days, a man contacted the detective on the case and said he might be the person described by the woman. He said he knew the woman and had been with her that night after being invited to her residence.
He said that there had been a dispute over money and was able to provide text messages from before and after his visit.
Police say he believes the reported rape was made in retaliation for the monetary dispute and other issues between them.
Investigators did a follow-up interview with the woman. She admitted that the original version of report involving an unknown male forcing his way in at gunpoint and sexually assaulting her was inaccurate.
Police said she admitted to knowing the man who contacted investigators and that he did not force his way into the residence.
The complainant has provided three different accounts of how the incident allegedly occurred to investigators and was evasive when asked about the monetary dispute.
“Based on the seriousness of the alleged incident, we dedicated extensive resources to fully investigate it. The investigation revealed that the incident did not happen as reported and it is important for us to let the community know in an effort to alleviate the fear and anxiety it caused,” said Bloomington Police Department spokesperson Captain Joe Qualters.
