INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Police made 24 arrests during a series of raids Thursday around the city as part of a sweep targeting known violent offenders.

IMPD said this was the second phase of “Operation First Step,” which started June 18 with a focus on drug houses. Police used information from community narcotics complaints to select their targets, and narcotics units served search warrants targeting known drug offenders.

According to IMPD, Thursday’s sweep was designed to reduce violent crime by addressing contributing factors, addressing quality of life issues in the affected communities and providing services to those who need them most.

Police served 12 warrants during the operation and arrested 24 people on charges ranging from dealing in cocaine to dealing in methamphetamine to other offenses like serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and maintaining a common nuisance.

IMPD seized nine guns and $9,720 in cash along with various quantities of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and prescription drugs. They also found drug paraphernalia and drug-making equipment.

2700 Columbia Avenue

  • Heroin and marijuana seized; one handgun recovered

  • Arrested: Derrick Kay, 36, serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, dealing in a controlled substance, dealing in marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance
  • Arrested: Kimberly Kay, 34, maintaining a common nuisance
  • Marijuana, formaldehyde, cocaine and prescription drugs seized; detectives recovered a handgun and a shotgun

  • Arrested: Sunny Gilbert, 40, dealing in a narcotic drug, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia
  • Arrested: Randy Miller, 30, possession of paraphernalia and invasion of privacy
  • Arrested: Jeffrey Arnold, 49, felony warrant for driving while intoxicated
  • One gram of heroin and 14 grams of marijuana seized
