INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A 1-year-old girl is on bed rest after being shot in the eye with a BB gun Monday

Police say it happened in the 3300 block of North Tara Lane around 5:45 p.m.

The girl's family says teenage boys were playing around, and they tried to shoot a 12-year-old with the BB gun, but the little girl, Azaelea Higgins, got hit.

“Some boys came to my house, banging on the door,” said Brittanya Sullivan, Azaelea's aunt, “My son told me he went to the door to open it. They didn’t say their names, so he opened it anyway, and the young man had shot the BB gun, and my niece was in the doorway… He was trying to shoot my son, but he shot her instead.”

Sullivan says Azaelea’s eye was swollen, and the little girl couldn’t open it.

“She yelled and screamed. She cried. She was a little woozy too. I think it really scared her more than, you know, just really hurt her,” Sullivan said.

Azaelea was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health Monday and was released Tuesday.

Azaelea's mother says she has a tear on her retina and laceration on her cornea. She says the eye is bleeding on the inside and the hope is that the bleeding will stop. The girl is on bed rest and wearing an eye shield to try and stop the bleeding. If it continues to bleed, Azalea's mother says she may lose eyesight.

Sullivan says this isn’t the first time a child’s been shot in the complex with the BB gun.

“The young boys were outside, and they were shooting in the window, and he shot my son in the lip with it,” she said, “I’ve talked to them, told them to stop playing with the guns. They wouldn’t listen, so this time I had to get his parent involved.”

IMPD said they did not make any arrests as a result of the incident, but a detective and DCS will likely follow up on the case.

The family spoke with police and the prosecutor’s office Tuesday.
