INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating after a fatal shooting on the city’s near east side.

Officers were called to the scene in the 2800 block of New York St. near Rural St. on a report of a person shot just after 3 p.m. Sunday.

A short time later, police confirmed that a woman had died from apparent gunshot wounds. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 49-year-old Catrina Russell.

Officer Genae Cook says the shooting happened inside a charcoal gray Lexus that was parked in a convenience store parking lot.

According to Cook, a man sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle then opened a door and pushed Russell out of the driver’s seat. He then reportedly fled the scene in the Lexus.

Police later located the vehicle in the 1600 block of Kealing Ave. near 16th and Sherman, but nobody was inside.

The shooting marks the city’s 16th criminal homicide of the year.
