INDIANAPOLIS – An errant tire led to a crash that killed a truck driver on the northeast side early Monday.

Indiana State Police confirmed the incident happened around 5:10 a.m. near mile marker 35.6 on I-465 westbound near a construction zone.

According to Sgt. John Perrine, this happened near the Allisonville Road exit.

Perrine said a semi lost a front wheel and pulled to the side. Another car hit the wheel, which became lodged underneath the car. The vehicle then struck the semi driver who was standing outside.

“Just a real unfortunate chain of events that led to this fatality,” Perrine said.

According to Perrine, it appeared the semi driver was checking for possible damage to the truck. The person had also retrieved a fire extinguisher, leading investigators to believe they may have tried to put out a fire. The victim died at an area hospital.

The semi driver’s name is being withheld pending family notification, Perrine said. He also said the driver who struck the victim cooperated with the investigation and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators don’t believe impairment played any role in the crash.

The exit, which was closed for about three hours, has since reopened. The incident remains under investigation.
