INDIANAPOLIS – Two people have now died after being critically injured in an apartment fire on the east side.

A 31-year-old man died early Wednesday morning, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department. A 1-year-old girl has also died, the department said.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office initially reported that the child died Wednesday night. The agency then issued a correction, saying the child was on a ventilator and adding that “death is imminent.”

IFD confirmed the 1-year-old’s death Thursday morning. The coroner’s office said she died from smoke inhalation.

Three other children ages 14, 12 and 3, remain in critical but stable condition at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health as of Thursday morning.

Crews were called to the Briergate Apartments in the 2800 block of Elwin Drive around 10:20 p.m. Monday. They encountered smoke in a hallway upon entering the building.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire and located a man and his 1-year-old daughter next to a burned-out couch. They also found three other children: a 14-year-old, a 12-year-old and a 3-year-old.

All five victims were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The Indianapolis Fire Department said the 31-year-old man — later identified as Raymond Diggs — died from his injuries early Wednesday morning. The 1-year-old died Thursday morning, IFD said.

The children’s mother was not home at the time of the fire and met investigators at the hospital, according to IFD.

Fire investigators said the apartment had no working smoke alarm. Apartment management said a working smoke alarm had been in the unit two weeks prior when they checked.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
