DECATUR COUNTY, Ind. — A man driving a FedEx semi-truck in central Indiana was knocked unconscious over the weekend after police say a rock was thrown through his windshield, causing the semi to crash into a median and severely injure the driver.

The incident occurred around 2:55 a.m. Sunday near the 127-mile marker of westbound I-74 in Decatur County, according to a Facebook post sent Monday from the county sheriff. Deputies were called shortly after for a single-vehicle crash involving a lone semi-truck.

Upon arrival, DCSD deputies found a FedEx semi alone in the middle of a median. The driver of the semi, later identified as Travis Hampton, was semi-conscious and had significant injuries to his head.

“The only thing I remember is waking up in the ambulance truck with them asking me questions,” Hampton said.

While further examining the semi, DCSD said deputies found Hampton’s 9-year-old daughter in the semi who was thankfully unharmed. They did, however, notice damage to the semi’s windshield.

Hampton was flown to St. Vincent’s Hospital due to the extent of his injuries.

“I have three broken or fractured bones under my eye and I had to get a little over 27 stitches in my lip top and bottom,” Hampton said.

Sheriff Bill Meyerrose said investigators found the roughly 3-pound rock in the cab of the semi. His detectives are right now viewing dash cam video of the incident. 

“This is not a tragic accident. This is an intended criminal act,” Meyerrose said. “Video clearly shows what exactly happened with the rock being thrown at the truck coming through the windshield there’s no question about what happened. It’s just a matter of who.”

The Sheriff said Hampton and his daughter could have easily died and what could appear to be a prank is no laughing matter. 

“If it is juveniles ‘having fun’ that’s not the fun that we appreciate here,” Meyerrose said.

Hampton told FOX59 he doesn’t know if he’ll ever drive again. He now just wants to know why the person did what they did.

“I would ask why of course,” Hampton said. “What was the reason? What are they getting out of trying to take someone else’s life?”

Meyerrose said his investigators have received some tips but would like to get more.
