Steve Brown — Chief Investigator

Steve Brown joined CBS4 in January of 2022 as Chief Investigator. Steve is a lifelong journalist. The job of reporter is the only one he’s ever had since graduating from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York in 1983.

“I joke with my sons that I’ve been doing this so long I’m not qualified to do anything else. But the truth is, I love this work.”

Steve’s travels have taken from Auburn, New York (WMBO-AM) to Utica, New York (WUTR-TV), to Springfield, Massachusetts (WWLP-TV), to Hartford, Connecticut (WTIC-TV), to Buffalo (WGRZ-TV & WKBW-TV) to the Fox News Channel in 1998.

As a correspondent assigned to the Chicago bureau, politics and elections were Steve’s primary beat. He covered four presidential election cycles (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012) and countless U.S. House and Senate contests, as well as numerous campaigns for governor.

Indiana was a frequent stop. Steve extensively covered the final Senate campaign of Frank Lugar, and he saw a lot of the Hoosier state during the historic 2008 presidential campaign, which saw then-Sen. Barack Obama become the first democratic candidate to take the state since Lyndon Johnson.

During his time with FNC, Steve landed one-on-one interviews with an large array of household political names including Obama, Mitch McConnell, Joe Biden, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio.

In 2014, Steve returned to Buffalo to become the investigative reporter at WGRZ-TV. During his time there, he won numerous awards, including four regional Edward R. Murrow awards and one national Murrow for chronicling a quarter-century of effort by a man who would eventually prove a Catholic priest was his biological father.

Steve is the proud father of three sons: Hayden, Graeme and Everett. His parents, Ellie and Tom, still live in his hometown of Waterloo, New York. When he’s not working, Steve is an avid cyclist and enjoys cooking and baking. A favorite are the cookies he brings in for colleagues in the newsroom.
