Mike Chappell is a graduate of Beech Grove High School and Ball State University’s Class of 1973.
He jokes that he has covered the Indianapolis Colts since they arrived on the Mayflower in 1984. Chappell began working at the Indy Star in the summer of ’84 and initially was the backup Colts writer while also covering small colleges. In 1989, he took over as the beat writer and held that position until 2013. Chappell left the newspaper in September 2014.
Chappell says he has had the pleasure of seeing a lot great NFL football, and some pretty bad football in the Colts early years. He has covered tons of Super Bowls, including the two involving the Colts.
Chappell is a long-time member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee (a pretty big deal, if we do say so ourselves). He was inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 2014 and was named Indiana’s Sportswriter of the Year for 2014.
He currently lives in Beech Grove with his wife, Cathy.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Reece Fountain’s comeback from a devastating ankle injury is underway. The Indianapolis Colts’ second-year wideout underwent surgery on Friday to repair a dislocation and fracture to his left ankle, according to Frank Reich. He suffered the injury in Thursday’s final training camp practice. The surgery, Reich said Sunday, “went very well. We’ll give him all the support we can and he needs. We expect a full and complete recovery.’’ At some point, the Colts will place Fountain, […]
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For all the yellow flags that littered the Lucas Oil Stadium turf Saturday, another probably was warranted: excessive celebration. The culprits: Ross Travis, teammates, family and friends. And no one would have blamed them. Less than a year removed from suffering a season-ending ACL injury in the final minutes of the preseason finale at Cincinnati, Travis was the center of a storm of euphoria in the end zone. His only reception in the Indianapolis Colts’ 21-18 loss […]
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The focus filtered from the quarterback who isn’t playing, to the quarterback who might have to play, to the quarterback who won’t be eligible to play when the season opens. From Andrew Luck working up a sweat and showing his increased agility in pregame warm-ups, to Jacoby Brissett making some strong throws during a second-quarter touchdown drive to Chad Kelly once again spinning some late magic. The fact the Indianapolis Colts dropped a 21-18 decision to the […]
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Areas of interest in the Indianapolis Colts’ Saturday preseason game with the Cleveland Browns in Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff: 4 p.m. Broadcast: WXIN More from starters: Frank Reich wants to get most of his front-line players into the game for about a quarter. That’s especially true for those who were held out of the opener at Buffalo. We should expect at least cameo appearances from T.Y. Hilton, Anthony Castonzo, Darius Leonard, Clayton Geathers, Eric Ebron, Jack Doyle, […]
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Reece Fountain has been released from the hospital after suffering a serious ankle injury during Thursday’s training camp practice, but the season is over for the Indianapolis Colts’ second-year receiver. Fountain will be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list in the next few days, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The team’s 2018 fifth-round draft pick suffered a fracture and dislocation of his left ankle during an 11-on-11 session with the Cleveland Browns. […]
WESTFIELD, Ind. – On a star-studded, back-to-the-future Thursday afternoon, one scene was a keeper. There was Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning, side-by-side and several yards behind the action, looking on as Jacoby Brissett ran the Indianapolis Colts offense. They chatted, nodded and chatted some more. The stories these two could share. The experiences they have shared. That includes being the first overall pick in the NFL draft – Manning in 1998, Luck in 2012. And it includes having a training […]
WESTFIELD, Ind. – The hush was deafening. The response by players and team personnel spoke volumes. During 11-on-11 work at Thursday’s final training camp practice against the Cleveland Browns, Reece Fountain went down on an otherwise uneventful play. His reaction – screaming and reaching for his left ankle – made it clear this wasn’t one of those minor strains or tweaks. The Indianapolis Colts’ second-year receiver suffered a “significant’’ ankle injury, according to Frank Reich. A source confirmed Fountain sustained […]
WESTFIELD, Ind. – That’s a wrap. After 16 practices and unceasing intrigue over a certain quarterback’s health/availability, the Indianapolis Colts’ second summer at Grand Park Sports Campus came to an end Thursday afternoon. It opened with through-the-roof hype, which was rooted in a much stronger roster and Andrew Luck’s expected participation, and stalled when the team shut down its $140 million quarterback after three training camp practices, each as a limited participant. It featured the old (Adam Vinatieri), the young […]
WESTFIELD, Ind. – Round two of the preseason promises to be more like the real thing. Frank Reich plans on playing more of his front-line players in Saturday afternoon’s meeting with the Cleveland Browns at Lucas Oil Stadium. That comes after seven offensive starters and another five on defense did not play in the preseason opener at Buffalo. The starters, Reich said following Wednesday’s shared practice with the Browns, are expected to play “about a quarter. A little bit more […]
WESTFIELD, Ind. – The time is nearing when The Decision must be made. Andrew Luck or Jacoby Brissett? Who’s under center when the Indianapolis Colts open a season of lofty aspirations Sept. 8 against the Chargers in Los Angeles? Who’s the guy? When the Colts and Cleveland Browns shared the Grand Park Sports Campus practice fields Wednesday, Brissett was the guy. He ran the No. 1 offense, just as he had for the previous 10 training camp sessions. Brissett, who’s immersed […]
