A native Midwesterner, Dan has enjoyed working close to home through the years, covering news in Indiana & Ohio throughout his 15-year career in television. Spehler comes to Fox 59 from WKRC in Cincinnati, where he served as a reporter/anchor. During that time, he came back to Indiana regularly to cover several major news stories, including the State Fair stage collapse and Super Bowl XLVI. Previously, he spent several years here in Indianapolis, covering everything from floods to tornadoes to the Colts’ Super Bowl victory in 2007!
In 2012, Spehler & the Fox 59 crew won an Emmy for their coverage of the South Side explosion, and Dan was also honored with an Emmy for his “Hoosier Heroes” series which launched in 2013, highlighting the achievements and struggles of our brave men and women in uniform. Spehler was again awarded an Emmy for his 2014 report on school bus safety. Dan was also awarded an Emmy for his political reporting during the 2016 election, when he conducted the very first interview with then-Gov. Pence after Pence was chosen as the Republican candidate for Vice President. Dan’s work in Indy has also been honored by the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Indiana Associated Press.
Originally from Ohio, Dan is a graduate of Bowling Green State University, and has also worked at television stations in Toledo and Dayton, before first moving to Indianapolis in 2005. Proud parents of two amazing little kids, Dan and his wife Kristi are proud to call Central Indiana home – they met here in Indy, and got married here in 2010.
