INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  – A man is dead following a shooting on Indy’s northeast side.  The violence took place around 11:30 a.m. Friday in a neighborhood near 46th and Shadeland.

Neighbors in the 4500 block of north Kitley avenue who witnessed the shooting say the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of a black SUV when the gunman got out of another parked car and started shooting.

Bullets shattered a back window, damaged the driver’s side door and left one man dead.  The reason for the violence remains unclear.

“Right now all we know is the vehicle was there at that location and a person was shot,” said IMPD officer Genae Cook.

Witnesses told police after the shooting the killer jumped into a getaway car, which drove around the block, then returned and someone fired more shots at the SUV before speeding away.

“Right now we do know a person involved in this fled the area in a silver vehicle.  That’s all the info we have right now,” said Cook.

“It’s a shame.  Things have got to change around here. This neighborhood has gotten bad,” said neighbor Jerry Maier.

Jerry says during the gunfire bullets damaged the front window pane of his elderly mother’s home.

“She could have very well been shot,” said Maier. “It’s sad.   It really is.   I worry about her.  She’s 86 so I basically have to take care of her.”

Fortunately the 86-year-old homeowner wasn’t hit by the stray bullets, but the man shot in the SUV died after being taken to the hospital.  His identity has not yet been released.

“It is a very dangerous situation.  These are homes.  People don’t understand just because you’re shooting at a person, a bullet can go through walls, bricks or windows.  What happens on the other side is just as important, because that could easily hurt somebody else,” said Cook.

Beyond a general description of the suspect’s silver or gray car, police did not have more information on the gunman to release.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call the IMPD Homicide Office at 317.327.3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317.262.TIPS (8477).
