WESTFIELD, Ind. – A major development plan is in the works in Westfield. The city wants the $35 million Grand Junction Park to become a central feature of the downtown area.

The six-acre park would have playgrounds, a performance venue space, pavilions, and a winter ice skating rink loop.

Another major aspect of the project would be restoring the Grassy Branch Creek. Westfield Mayor Andy Cook says the creek was something the city used to be known for.

Cook says he hopes the park brings more people and businesses to the area.

“We want our downtown to be rather eclectic. We want to save as many buildings as we can, re-purpose buildings,” Cook said. “The Park Street Dining District has some very unique restaurants in it that have all been built here because of the coming plaza.”

The city will officially unveil the project and potential funding for the project Monday night. Cook says the funding would come from tax increment financing.

Council would vote on the project in late February or early March. Construction would begin this summer and wrap-up by the summer of 2021.
