UPDATE: Wrong-way driver blamed for crash in Henry County that claims life of Richmond teen
HENRY COUNTY, Ind. — A 19-year-old Richmond man was killed late Monday when his vehicle was struck by a car driving in the wrong direction on I-70 in Henry County. The accident happened about 10 p.m. in the east-bound lanes near mile marker 122, just west of the New Castle exit.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2012 Hyundai driven by Phaedra Winters, 55, of Huber Heights, Ohio, was for an unknown reason, driving west in the east bound lanes of I-70 when her car struck a 2010 Honda head-on in the passing lane, according to an Indiana State Police news release.
The driver of the Honda, Chase Thomas, 19, of Richmond, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Winters was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of multiple fractures. Two other vehicles ran off the road avoiding the crash. A 2012 Chevrolet Truck driven by Cheryl Moore of Chillicothe, Ohio, and a 2007 Toyota driven by Elsadig Harolin-Osman of Dayton, Ohio. Moore was treated and released at the scene and Osman refused treatment.
HENRY COUNTY, Ind. – I-70 is closed in both directions due to a crash in Henry County, according to Indiana State Police.
Drivers should seek alternate routes as they travel near mile marker 120, southwest of New Castle.
The closure is expected to last until about midnight.
