IMPD investigates after man hit by train on east side

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Police are investigating after a man was hit by a train on the east side of Indianapolis Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on the train tracks between Dearbon and Rural streets.

According to a police report, the man's legs were severed. A public information officer from Metro police said the victim is in critical condition.

The police report also states train staff said they saw the man lying in between the tracks as the train approached. While they tried to stop the train, they were not able to avoid the collision.

Train company CSX issued a statement, saying in part:

"Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by today’s incident. CSX personnel are assisting the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in its investigation, and we appreciate the swift efforts of local first responders. The incident caused train traffic to stop for about 90 minutes."

This incident comes just months after people who live near the crash scene shared concerns about safety near the tracks. The residents expressed worries about trains blocking crossings and what frustrated people on foot would do to get around the train cars.

"When the train is stopped there for 20 or 30 minutes, they end up walking under the train," said resident Michael Haskett in February.  "I’ve seen them climbing up between the cars."

The identity of the victim has not been released yet.
