INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– Police say a person died Friday in a shooting near a funeral home on the city’s near north side.
Officers were called to the 2200 block of N. Illinois St., near Stuart Mortuary, around 12:30 p.m. on a report of gunshots in the area.
IMPD said the male victim was in very critical condition when homicide detectives were called to the scene. The victim later died from his wounds. He was identified by IMPD as 55-year-old Byron Frierson.
“He was just the nicest, kindest. He’d give you anything. He was just so sweet. I’m going to miss him. I’m going to miss him real bad,” explains Kim Holloway, Frierson’s friend.
Police say Frierson is a bail bondsman. Frierson owned No Limit Bail bonds in downtown Indianapolis.
A male suspect, later identified as 19-year-old Robert Dew, of Indianapolis, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. In addition to murder, Dew is also facing drug dealing and possession charges.
A funeral was going on at the time inside the facility, but the shooting happened outside. Police have not said if the shooting is related to the funeral in any way.
Stuart Mortuary issued the following statement:
On behalf of The entire staff of Stuart Mortuary, I extend heartfelt sympathy to the family of the gentleman who lost his life today, while we remain prayerful with the family we were serving at our facility.
We thank the joined officers of IMPD for their service, and we commend them for their professionalism in restoring peace in the midst of this tragedy which occurred while apprehending the suspect.
