Deputy Pickett’s patrol vehicle memorialized in front of Boone County Sheriff’s Office

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. – Authorities in Boone County have placed Deputy Jacob Pickett’s patrol car in front of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office for a public memorial.

A memorial was held for Deputy Pickett. His K9 partner Brik was there, along with many members of the law enforcement community.

Saturday there were several events taking place that helped honor Pickett and his service to his community. Members of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office drove Pickett’s vehicle through Lebanon, where many residents stood outside to pay their respects as the SUV rolled by. Little American flags were placed alongside the road and blue ribbons were tied to light posts.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen said the ride through town made him cry.

“The outpouring of support has really touched our hearts beyond imagine,” said Nielsen. “We have really good people here in Boone County and for the most part, they support us 110 percent.

The SUV was placed on a grassy area with a picture of Pickett and Brik.

“It was fitting for us to make sure Brik was there, personally, today,” Nielsen said. “Brik will attend the services with Jake and all of us, as well. Jake was a part of our team and Brik is a part of our team. So is Jen (Pickett’s wife) and we will continue to have those relationships and keep them in the family.”

Many mourners have left flowers and other items at the site.

"It's heartbreaking," said Lori Kincaid. "For him, his family and for police. It's hard to talk about. I didn't know him personally, but it's a community we all try to stand together with."

While dozens, possibly hundreds, of people stopped by Pickett's vehicle throughout the day, hundreds were there Saturday evening for a quick candlelight vigil.

Brad Konija brought an American flag that he placed on the front of Pickett's vehicle.

"To show [police] America still supports him," said Konija. "This great country we still have all this negativity going on. I thought it would be a good reminder."

Funeral arrangements have not been made yet that this time.
