INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After being stuck open Sunday night and most of Monday morning, the west half of the roof at Lucas Oil Stadium is closed once again.
The stadium’s executive director, Barney Levengood said a sensor on the western half of the roof had gone off, preventing that side of the roof from closing after Sunday’s Colts game against the Tennessee Titans. With no rain in the forecast, Levengood said the decision was made to wait until daylight Monday to work on fixing the problem.
It didn’t take long for jokes to start showing up on Twitter:
The roof was closed again by 11:40 Monday morning. Video showed it took a little under an hour for the panel to slide shut.
When asked if the issue had been resolved, Levengood said “It’s closed.” Levengood told the Indystar he would feel comfortable opening and closing the roof moving forward, and the sensor going off seemed to be a random bug as opposed to a major problem.
Lucas Oil Stadium will host the Big Ten Football Championship game between Ohio State and Wisconsin this Saturday.
It surprised many fans Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts announced that the roof and window would be open for the Colts’ game against the Titans.
Temperatures were near 50 for Sunday’s game and conditions were sunny. Still, many fans who went to the game weren’t prepared for the weather. Others had to bundle up. Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted on Friday that it was possible that the roof would be open, telling fans they “should prepare for the great outdoors”:
This is just the latest mechanical problem for the $720 million stadium.
Two years ago, the stadium had to keep the roof closed after a bolt fell while the roof was being opened, injuring three people. Engineers said that bolt wasn’t properly tightened, leading to the incident and prompting an inspection and repairs.
How has the roof affected the team’s performance over the years? Our media partners at the IndyStar compiled this handy guide:
- Roof and window open: 8-7
- Roof open, window closed: 8-0
- Roof closed, window open: 1-5
- Roof and window closed: 33-15
