TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. – Two people were killed when their Toyota Corolla collided with a semi in Tippecanoe County Tuesday.

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office said the semi was southbound on the Hoosier Heartland Highway when the car pulled into its path around 4 p.m.

The sheriff’s office believes the car failed to stop at the intersection at County Road 1075 N. and drove under the side of the truck.

The driver, Kristine Swank, 65, and passenger, Lois Green, 87, both died at the scene. The semi driver, identified as 48-year-old Jerry Watkins of Michigantown, was not injured in the accident.

The sheriff’s office said drivers reported rain in the area at the time of the collision, but it is unknown if weather was a factor. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the crash. Swank and Green were wearing seat belts and their airbags deployed, police said, but the impact from the crash was too severe for them to survive.

The southbound lanes of the Hoosier Heartland Highway were closed for four hours as crews extricated the victims’ bodies and cleaned up the wreckage. The crash remains under investigation.
