When officers arrived at E. 38th St. and Emerson Ave., they found a 22-year-old male shot in the buttocks. The victim was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition. A second gunshot victim was discovered at the Sunoco station at E. 38th St. and Irvington Ave. That victim had been shot in the upper hip.
"We had an officer right down the street, he heard shots fired," said Capt. Michael Elder with IMPD. "We got down here, people were running, people were driving away. We found two people shot."
Elder said several cars were hit during the gunfire. Witnesses described a chaotic scene.
"I heard a lot of gunshots and I heard a young lady screaming and hollering, 'Help, help,' but I still heard gunshots," said Layshurn Phillips, who lives nearby. "I mean people running, that’s the only thing I can say was happening but that’s ridiculous, and can we all just stop the violence, it’s a new year?"
Phillips said her car window was shot out.
"I was asleep and I woke up and it was just a bunch of gunfire," said Jerry Thomas, another neighbor. "And I looked out the window, and we saw people running, and then we came out, because one person was hollering help, and then we came out. About that time the police had showed up, but I didn’t know my truck had been shot."
A disturbance inside the VIP Lounge is what prompted the shooting, according to officers at the scene. There were an estimated 200-300 people in the bar at the time. The disagreement then spilled outside, resulting in gunfire.
