INDIANAPOLIS– Fire destroyed two homes in the 6400 block of Whitaker Farms Drive Sunday evening.

That scene is near Stop 11 Road and Combs Road on the city’s southeast side.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. , the fire department received multiple calls about a residence on fire.

When firefighters arrived they found flames shooting 30 feet into the air.

The wind-driven flames quickly spread to the house next door.

Firefighters described the blaze as fast moving which forced them into a defensive attack on both structures.

Extra firefighters and equipment were called to the scene.

There were no injuries reported but a family of four and a family of two were displaced from their homes.

Crews battled heavy smoke, a frozen water hydrant,  as well as frozen gear and equipment in bitter cold temperatures.

Firefighters say it took 30 minutes to bring both fires under control.

One family reported that their pet cat is still unaccounted for.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
