INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – An IMPD officer worked double duty Saturday night, protecting Indianapolis residents and seven newborn puppies.

Officer Scott Charleswood found the dogs in a dumpster after he heard their cries, according to Every Dog Counts Rescue. He then took off his heavy police jacket and carefully wrapped them up to keep them warm during the brutal temperatures.

Charleswood then delivered the pups to a foster home, where they’ll get warmed up and have their “bellies fed.”

“So far all are accepting the bottle and eating well. Truly is AMAZING!!” said the rescue.

Both the rescue and the police department reached out on Facebook to thank Charleswood for going above and beyond for those in the Indianapolis community, both two-legged and four-legged.

The rescue says the puppies will be up for adoption 10 weeks from now. Donations to the rescue can be made here.

It appears to be a dangerous weekend for puppies in the Circle City. Early Saturday morning, a truck carrying dozens of dogs crashed on I-865 due to freezing rain.
