LOGANSPORT, Ind.– Officials confirm a freshman student-athlete at IUPUI was killed in an accidental shooting in Logansport.

Logansport police say Jacob Graf, 18, and a close friend were at Graf’s residence when the shooting took place. Police were called to the scene just after 12 a.m. Thursday. Graf’s parents were asleep in the residence when the shooting happened.

Graf was shot in the head with a 9mm handgun and taken to Logansport Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy ruled his death as a self-inflicted, accidental gunshot wound.

The IUPUI Athletics Department confirmed Graf was a freshman at the school and a member of the men’s cross country and track teams. He was studying pre-criminal justice.

“We are shaken by this tragedy. It is always heartbreaking to see a young life cut short,” IUPUI Director of Athletics Dr. Roderick Perry said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jake’s family and friends in this time of need, and we will provide support and comfort to his teammates, friends, coaches and colleagues throughout the grieving process.”

Graf signed with IUPUI after earning the 2015 North Central Conference crown in cross country, three straight All-NCC honors and three consecutive semi-state berths.

“Jake was a great, great kid. He truly was,” Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. “He was a tremendous teammate and a tremendous friend to all of our guys. He had big goals and an incredibly bright future ahead of him. It hurts to lose someone of his character and his caliber at such a young age, but we take comfort in knowing how huge of an impact he made in a short period of time. Our prayers most certainly go out to his family.”
