INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– The Indianapolis Fire Department responded to an apartment fire Thursday evening on the city’s south side.

IFD and Beech Grove crews were dispatched to Sawmill Apartments, located in at 3710 Lickridge Lane, just after 7 p.m.

Heavy smoke was seen coming from the roof and firefighters called in a second alarm at 7:21 p.m. At 8:05 p.m., the fire was marked under control and the second alarm was canceled.

Investigators say the cause remains under investigation, but preliminary information points to an electrical issue in the attic.

Of the building’s 18 units, four were damaged. About 75 people were displaced, at least for the night. IFD victims assistance and the Red Cross helped provide shelter.

One person was checked out at the scene but was not transported to the hospital. A cat named Tootie was rescued from an apartment on the first floor.

Damage from the fire is estimated to be $250,000.
