INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department came together to provide a disabled Walmart greeter a wheelchair.

Police say the greeter, Ashley, was using a chair held together with duct tape and had flat tires. Her coworkers attempted to raise money for a new chair themselves, but not enough was raised.

Officer Reichle became aware of the woman’s story and decided to encourage fellow officers to help.

Sgt. Wilson reached out to the community on social media and was overwhelmed by the amount of people willing to help. One of those who offered was Officer Santos Cortez, who was paralyzed from the chest down when his squad car was hit by a drunk driver in 2012. Cortez offered up an extra wheelchair that he had in his garage.

On Thursday, Dec. 8, Sgt. Wilson met with Cortez to pick up the chair and deliver it to Ashley while she was working at the Walmart on Lafayette Road. Police say Ashley was overwhelmed with emotions and almost moved to tears at the generosity shown to her by the officers.
