INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Sunday is Indiana’s bicentennial! The Hoosier State became the 19th state to join the United States on December 11, 1816.

In honor of the special day, Vice President-elect Governor Mike Pence declared the day “Ignite the Future Day” in Indiana.

“For the past year, the citizens of Indiana have celebrated the growth and greatness of our state by creating more than 1,500 bicentennial legacy projects to celebrate and honor the history, communities and natural beauty of this state,” said Pence. “We encourage young Hoosiers to learn the lessons of this bicentennial and our proud Hoosier heritage to propel this state forward and ‘Ignite the Future’ of Indiana.”

An “Ignite the Future” event was held at the Farmers Coliseum on the city’s north side from 10 a.m. to noon. Pence and Indiana Governor-elect Eric Holcomb were both in attendance.

The two-hour program included a variety of speakers from diverse faith backgrounds as well as music, dance and more.
