INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A man who was critically injured in an early morning fire at the Hotel Indy (Apartments) Wednesday has died.

Fire officials say Al Curtis Williams succumbed to his injuries after being injured in the fire in the 5100 block of East 38th Street.

Williams’ death is the sixth fire related death for the Indianapolis Fire Department service district in 2016.

The fire, which forced 45 people to evacuate, caused an estimated $80,000 in damage.

The building was inspected by fire officials in August and November of 2016, where it was cited for six “minor violations.” Authorities say management was in the process of repairing those problems.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it started in the basement of the residential hotel.
