INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin said goodbye to the Indianapolis archdiocese at a celebratory Mass Saturday morning. He’s leaving the Circle City to lead the Newark, New Jersey archdiocese.

The “Mass of Celebration with Cardinal Tobin” took place at the SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral on North Meridian Street in Indianapolis.

The church says the celebration, which began at 11 a.m., provided Cardinal Tobin the opportunity to “say farewell to the archdiocese he has served and grown to love since his installation as its shepherd on Dec. 3, 2012.”

Mayor Joe Hogsett was expected to attend the Mass.

Saturday was also the feast day of St. Francis Xavier, principal patron of the archdiocese.
