CROTHERSVILLE, Ind. – Six people were injured in a three-vehicle crash on I-65 in Jackson County Saturday afternoon.

State police responded to the crash near the 38 mile marker around 4 p.m.

An initial investigation indicated that a 2015 Kia Forte driven by Ernest J. Pagels, Jr., 53, was traveling southbound when the vehicle slowed for an unknown reason.

A southbound 2012 Dodge van, carrying April K. Bickel, 41, and four children, swerved to avoid striking the slowed vehicle. The van was then struck in the rear by a 2004 Mercury driven by Jeffery L. Ireland, 59.

Ireland was treated for minor injuries. Bickel was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of her injuries.  An 8-year-old, 6-year-old and 2-year-old in the van were all air-lifted to Kosair Children’s Hospital for treatment of critical life-threatening injuries. The fourth child, a 4-year-old, was transported by ambulance to the same hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Police say alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash at this time.

The southbound lanes of I-65 near the 38 mile marker were closed for around two hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
