Three family members killed after hitting deer while returning home from band competition in Indy

GREENE COUNTY, Ind. – Three members of a Newburgh family were killed in crash on I-69 early Sunday morning.

State police say David Rinehart, 46, Ruth Rinehart, 74, Josie Rinehart, 18, and Sophie Rinehart, 17 were traveling southbound when their Honda Civic struck a deer near the 103 mile marker in Greene County. The family then pulled to the side of the road.

A short time later, a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck driven by Mason Hartkey, 19, left the roadway and struck the Rinehart’s vehicle.

David, Ruth and Sophie were all killed during the crash. Josie suffered cuts and abrasions and was transported to IU Health Bloomington.

Hartkey was also transported to IU Health for a fractured arm.

The Rinehart family was in Indianapolis for the Bands of America National Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Castle Bands broke the news to their community on their Facebook page.

Bands of America also took to Facebook to express their condolences.

The Rinehart family has been notified and the crash investigation is ongoing.
