INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – It appears there’s no end in sight for the Indianapolis Colts’ season-long issue with injuries.

The team signed free-agent tight end Chase Coffman Tuesday, a clear sign veteran tight end Dwayne Allen will miss some time. Allen suffered an injury to his right ankle in Sunday night’s loss at Houston.

Coach Chuck Pagano was unable to provide an update on Allen’s status Monday, but the signing of Coffman addresses depth at the position. The only healthy tight ends on the active roster were Jack Doyle and Erik Swoope.

Allen, a 2012 third-round draft pick who signed a four-year, $29.4 million contract during the offseason, has dealt with a variety of injuries since appearing in all 16 games as a rookie. From 2013-15, he missed 21 games with hip, ankle, knee and calf issues. He missed the final 15 games of ’13 with a hip injury.

For as long as Allen is out, the bulk of the work at the position will fall on Doyle, the Cathedral High School product. He’s in the midst of the best year of his career with 20 receptions, 204 yards and three touchdowns. All already are career best.

Swoope has two catches for 42 yards, including a 35-yard reception against the Titans.

Coffman spent training camp with the Colts before being released Sept. 4. He has appeared in 37 career games with three starts while spending time with Seattle, Tennessee, Atlanta and Cincinnati.

More roster moves: In other injury-related moves, the team placed wideout/kick returner Quan Bray on the injured reserve list and elevated wideout Tevaun Smith to the active roster from the practice squad. Bray suffered an ankle injury at Houston.

Smith’s addition was also necessitated by the ongoing absence of wide receiver Donte Moncrief (shoulder) and uncertain status of wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, who left the Texans game with a hamstring injury.

The Colts also signed wideout Marcus Leak and cornerback Frankie Williams to the practice squad and released safety Lee Hightower from the practice squad. Tight end Mike Miller was placed on the practice squad injured reserve list.
