INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - When you see severe weather damage and it's not an emergency, you might not know where to turn. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security has released a new app to eliminate the guessing game.

You can snap a picture and upload it to the app. If it's not safe to take a picture, you can simply submit text.

The information goes to the IDHS Watch Desk, which is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They will immediately alert public safety partners in that area.

"It comes out of a need for more information," said John Erickson, IDHS Director of Public Affairs. "It’s certainly an information age. We want to make sure that we have as many ways as possible to receive reports. In the public safety community we have many eyes, but when we enlist citizens we have many more eyes, ears and reporters who can help us with gathering information."

IDHS wants to make clear this app is not a substitute for 911 and you should not put yourself in harm's way to get a picture to submit.

"Generally the feedback that we’ve gotten has been positive," said Erickson. "We have had some people who have made some suggestions, some we’ve been able to implement and we’re very appreciate of all the information that’s been provided so far."

You can also report other situations, such as car accidents you see or suspicious activity.

The app is free on Apple and Android. Search for "Indiana Homeland Security Report Hazards."
