INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- Indiana governor and Republican vice president nominee Mike Pence left the campaign trail Wednesday and returned to Indiana as strong storms and tornadoes ripped through the Hoosier State.

Pence said in a press conference that 27 counties reported tornado warnings. Eight tornadoes were confirmed in the state, and at least three touched down.

"The most severe damage that we are aware of at this time was in Howard County and Montgomery County," he said.

Approximately 15 homes were damaged in Howard County, along with some local businesses. A Starbucks was completely leveled.

In Montgomery County, approximately 30 homes were damaged to various degrees.

"At this point I say with a grateful heart that we have no reports of serious injuries or deaths as a result of these storms," said Pence. "We are currently monitoring roughly ten to 15 minor injuries in Howard County and we are in the assessment process in Montgomery County.

The governor called it "amazing" that there were so few injuries.

Pence said he would be in Howard and Montgomery Counties Thursday morning as crews survey the damage.
