COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus police arrested a woman after she allegedly used a bar to barricade her two small children inside a bedroom.

Officers responded to a home in the 1100 block of Grand Avenue on Saturday shortly after 10:00 p.m., and they spoke with witnesses who had been assisting the family with fixing a leaking hot water heater.

While inside the home, the witnesses told officers they could hear children yelling behind a closed door and noted a bar across the outside of the door barricading the children inside.

They also said they could not locate the children’s mother, Kylei E. Thompson, 25, at the residence.

Officers later spoke with Thompson, who allegedly said she locked her 5-year-old and 1-year-old child in the bedroom so that the leaking water from the water heater would not hurt them.

Officers observed marks on the bedroom door that were consistent with the bar being placed multiple times on the door to secure it.  The investigating officers also noted poor living conditions inside the home including very little food in the refrigerator and freezer.

Thompson was taken into custody on preliminary charges of two counts of neglect of a dependent.  The children were placed in the care of the Department of Child Services.
