DALEVILLE, Ind. – A Delaware County couple will face child neglect charges after officials removed more than 100 cats from a home in Daleville earlier this month.

Steven M. Wood, 51, and his 47-year-old wife, Angela R. Lock-Wood, are charged with neglect of a dependent. The charges stem from living conditions at the house located in the 13900 block of West Daleville Road.

A child lived in the home, investigators said. Authorities were called to the property after another resident, a 75-year-old woman, died there.

When authorities arrived, they found dozens upon dozens of animals; crews had to enter the home in hazmat suits because the smell was so overpowering. Delaware County officials said it was the worst case of animal hoarding they’d ever seen.

Daleville police said several people were living in the home at the time of the woman’s death. The home had been condemned.

An initial hearing is scheduled in the case for Aug. 29.
