INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Five times in the last two months, thieves ripped off a lawn and garden center on Indy’s north side.
The crooks have repeatedly hit the business near 71st Street and Keystone Avenue in the middle of the night, starting in June and again twice this week.
“He pulls right in here and he’ll jump the fence, grab what he wants and puts it over the fence,” said owner Kathy Cantrell.
Cantrell is describing how the man seen in a surveillance video calmly steps over the gate and steals from her business. Cameras show the suspect placing handfuls of the hanging plants next to his car.
Less than 24 hours later, a second video shows the same thief strike again, putting even more plants in his car. Kathy says lately the thefts have piled up.
“We got hit in June and twice in July and then twice already this month,” said Cantrell.
The small business sits right along Keystone so to avoid traffic the crook strikes in the middle of the night.
Kathy has owned the nursery since the 60’s and has never seen so many thefts in such a short time.
“You learn to accept it once or twice, but five times is very unacceptable,” said Cantrell.
The videos show the suspect doesn’t appear to be in any big hurry. Each time the thief takes several minutes to pick out his favorite plants to steal.
“It’s not like a smash and grab type deal. He’s after specific plants,” said Cantrell.
Kathy says the thefts in June and July showed more than one suspect. She doesn’t know why the thieves would steal so many flowers, but she is not happy about it.
“As my daughter would say, I’m livid over the whole situation,” said Cantrell.
Because of the thefts, Kathy says they are rethinking their security plans and where they place their cameras.
In the meantime, anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.
