COLUMBUS, OH – A Columbus woman died after she was stabbed while trying to save her grandchildren from a convicted sex offender, The Columbus Dispatch reports.

The incident happened on June 23.

Candy Arthurs, 45, was with her two grandchildren, Jeremy Mullins, 7, and Kourtnee Mullins, 8, when they were approached by Kristopher T. Amos, 29.

Amos asked the trio if they would help him search for a lost drone. While the family was helping Amos, he led the two children into an alley.

Arthurs realized what was going on, and confronted Amos. That’s when Amos allegedly stabbed her in the heart with a large knife and also stabbed Jeremy in the shoulder, Columbus police told the Columbus Dispatch.

Columbus police said Arthurs “pushed the children to safety” and helped the kids run home. She collapsed when she reached the front steps of their house, and she was bleeding heavily.

On Wednesday, August 3, Arthurs died from her injury. Amos has been charged with murder.

Arthur’s daughter Amanda Gibson, 27, told the Columbus Dispatch her mother is her hero. “My mother always told me she would die for them, and that’s exactly what she did.”

The family created a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs and medical bills. (The GoFundMe page hasn’t been updated since Arthurs’ death on Wednesday.)
