Correctional officer accused of trafficking drugs at Pendleton facility

PENDLETON, Ind. – A jail officer at Pendleton Correctional Facility was arrested after officials said she gave brought drugs to the facility to give to an inmate.

Staff questioned Officer Shyritta Wells on Monday after a security device showed she had metal on her. She consented to a search; investigators found contraband and handwritten letters that contained what they deemed suspicious information.

Indiana State Police Det. Robert May and Information and Intelligence Officer Chris Peterson escorted Wells to Indiana State Police Post No. 51 for questioning. She was then taken to the Madison County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and trafficking with an inmate.

The facility’s investigative office is working to determine which offenders were involved in the trafficking.

According to jail officials, Wells started working at Pendleton Correctional in May 2016.
