INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Doctors still have not cleared Dale Earnhardt Junior to return to the Sprint Cup, so Jeff Gordon will fill in at least two more races for his former Hendrick Motorsports teammate.

Gordon will suit up and drive the 88 car at Watkins Glen (August 7) and Bristol (August 20).

“We have a break in the schedule after Watkins Glen, so the extra week of recovery time will certainly be a benefit,” said team owner Rick Hendrick to hendrickmotorsports.com. “Dale will be back when he’s ready, and we’re looking forward to that happening, but the priority continues to be his health and well-being. We’ll keep our focus on that and let the doctors guide us.”

As for Gordon, Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen will be No. 800 in his Sprint Cup career.
