INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Trauma kits issued to IMPD officers are credited with helping two officers who were shot this month, but more of the kits are needed.

In 2013, The Father’s House church spearheaded an effort to buy the kits for every officer. Pastor Chris Holland said it was the least his congregation could do to support their officers.

“We didn’t want anybody to have to need them, but we were so glad they had them when they needed them,” Holland said.

The kits, which include items to help save a life before an ambulance arrives at a scene, have been used numerous times since then.

On Monday, a kit was used on an officer shot in the ankle during a police pursuit.

Earlier this month, three kits were used on an officer who was shot in the leg while trying to subdue a suicidal subject.

“I was with him up in the hospital. (That) precious, precious man, serving his community, got to go home with his family,” Holland said.

More of the kits are needed, though. In a news conference Tuesday, FOP President Rick Snyder said he would ask the city for emergency funding to outfit all officers with the kits, tactical vests, and helmets. According to Snyder, around 200 new officers have not been able to receive full kits for their cars.

“We need more of these. Every class that graduates from the department, from the academy, we want to see them leave there with one of these,” Holland said.

Detective Wayne Shelton, who is also a Deacon at The Father’s House, said the kits have become a tool every officer counts on.

“There’s not a day that I get into my police car, that I look and see that trauma kit, that I’m not reassured that if something were to happen, I were injured or came across someone that was injured, that I would be able to respond,” Shelton said.
