Downtown canal dyed purple in honor of retired Navy Seal prior to Brickyard 400

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- The canal in downtown Indianapolis wad dyed purple on Friday in honor of retired Navy Seal Jason Redman.

Mayor Hogsett issued a proclamation declaring Friday as "Jason Redman Day" in Indianapolis.

Redman's team came under heavy fire in 2007. He suffered injuries to the face and left arm.

After his recovery, he founded the non-profit organizations Combat Wounded Coalition and Wounded Wear to help wounded warriors recover.

The Combat Wounded Coalition is the namesake of this year's Brickyard 400, dubbed the  “Crown Royal presents the Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at the Brickyard.”

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway said Redman was named the winner while he completed his 100th skydiving jump in Suffolk, Virginia. Redman witness the reveal of the official logo painted in the landing area as he approached the ground.

The race is typically named each year after a deserving hero. This is the first time the winner has selected to name the race after a charity.
