INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Art Jones’ troubles with the Indianapolis Colts have taken another bad turn.

The veteran defensive tackle has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, according to a league spokesman.

There was no immediate comment from the Colts.

Jones will be eligible to return to the Colts’ active roster Monday, Oct. 3 following the Oct. 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. He is allowed to participate in all preseason work and games.

The four-game suspension will cost Jones four games checks, or a total of $588,235.

The suspension is yet another setback for one of general manager Ryan Grigson’s high-profile free agents in 2014. After signing a five-year, $33 million contract, Jones has played in only 12 games, including the playoffs. He dealt with an ankle injury in ’13, then missed all of last year after damaging ligaments in his left ankle during the preseason.

Jones’ rehabilitation forced him to miss all of the Colts’ offseason work.
